Losing Margaret: A Romance Scam Becomes A Family Nightmare by Katharine Tober

She was looking for love. They were looking for money.

After losing her beloved husband, Margaret turns to the internet for companionship, and falls into a devastating romance scam.

For two years, strangers manipulate her trust and loneliness, taking hundreds of thousands of dollars while her three nieces desperately fight to save the woman they love.

Based on true events, Losing Margaret is a heartbreaking story of deception, family, and the lengths we’ll go to protect someone who can no longer protect herself.

One woman. Hundreds of thousands lost. Three nieces who refuse to give up.

I borrowed this one from my church library.  Because this is based on a true story and is based not far from where I live, it hit especially close to home. Making it all the more real and all the harder to put down.

Margaret is widowed and lonely after losing her husband Ray and in that grief she falls prey to overseas predators who know exactly how to take advantage of someone vulnerable and alone. As the scam takes hold, it doesn’t just cost Margaret. It pulls her whole family into a nightmare as they try to reach her and undo the damage. And trying to stop further damage is a lot harder then one would think.

This was an emotional read. My heart broke for Margaret, it was hard to watch someone so vulnerable be manipulated by people who saw her loneliness as an opportunity. Tober doesn’t treat her as foolish, just human, and that makes it all the more heartbreaking. It’s also a powerful reminder of how real these scams are and how easily they can happen to someone we love.

It’s the kind of story that has stayed with me and a good nudge to check in on the people in our lives who might be lonely.
